Paper Recycling

Paper is the number one material that we throw away. For every 100 pounds of trash we throw away, 35 pounds is paper. Newspapers take up about 14 percent of landfill space, and paper in packaging accounts for another 15 to 20 percent.

Paper has many forms. It can be glossy or ragged, thin or thick. It can be the stuff of newspapers or the stuffing of diapers. Most paper products are made from trees that have been cut and pulped, though paper can also be made from old cloth or grass.

SP&M handles all grades of recovered paper, including old corrugated containers, office papers, old newspapers and printers’ mix. As a valued supplier to our own and outside paper mills, our job is to supply paper. That means we’re in the business for the long-term and go out of our way to provide dependable paper recovery services to our customers.

Corrugated packaging material is generally referred to by the general public as ‘cardboard’ and by the industry as Old Corrugated Cardboard (OCC). Corrugated cardboard can be identified by its multi-layer construction and its brown color. The wavy middle layer is what gives the cardboard its strength, while at the same time making it light in weight. Cardboard is inexpensive to produce and to date is the most efficient shipping container used to package and move materials securely.

To recycle a corrugated container you need to remove all contents including plastic bags and styrofoam. It is okay to leave tape, labels, and staples on the corrugated because paper mills have the capability of removing these items during the pulping process.

Not all cardboard containers are recyclable. Paperboard: flat, pressed, stiff paper used in cereal boxes, is often called cardboard, but does not have flutes, is of a lower quality paper, and is often coated. Paperboard should be kept to a minimum in an OCC collection program.
